In the news this week, there was rain in London, conflict in the Middle East and the Wallis family moved house once again. Our good friend Jenna offered a word of encouragement by reminding us that we are only pilgrims in this world. Unfortunately, after moving five times in 2.5 years we are beginning to feel more like nomads. Actually the whole moving thing is beginning to feel a bit passé really. But oh well.
The reason for our move is that our landlord is selling our house. That is a real bummer, as we were perfectly happy where we were. He must have known that we’d been in the same place for just over a year and was therefore time to give us the boot. We searched and searched but it is actually pretty hard to find three bedroom unfurnished houses close to the park and close to the DLR. The place we ended up getting we were not all that keen on just because it is quite modern (< 10 years old). Feels weird to live in anything less than 100 years old in a historic area like Greenwich. It is bright and open though and it’s slowly growing on us.
The good news is that it is probably the most problem-free move we’ve had so far. We tried a different moving company this time and they were top notch. This means that they didn’t curse our house, threaten our oversized-Canadian furniture with an axe, or even complain about actually having to move something. No crane for said oversized-Canadian furniture required this time, either.
For next time (yes, there will definitely be a next time) I have made a mental note to acquire all boxes well in advance. On Wednesday night Melody gave me a “no-fail mission” to go out and find extra boxes. This saw me driving to every grocery store in Greenwich looking for boxes. By 10:30pm I was getting desperate. I wasn’t sure what the consequences of failing a “no-fail mission” would be, but I wasn’t about to find out. I made a final stop at ASDA and shuffled empty boxes of crisps back and forth to the car for two hours while the crisps lady stocked the aisle. IT-guy-turned-stock-boy… brought back childhood memories of stocking shelves at Mac’s Milk for $5/hour.
Anyway we made it safe and sound. Hopefully it starts to feel like home at some point. But having now unpacked boxes we are now packing suitcases! We are off to Scandinavia for 10 days for a much-needed vacation. Nomads never stay in one place for long. |
