Two great talkers will not travel far together. ~ Spanish Proverb

*sigh* ... yes, take your time, I've got all day. All the time in the world. No where else to go...

Next week is the start of our prenatal classes. When we first met the midwife holding the classes, it was at a meet-and-greet at a children’s clothing store beside the local Starbucks (natch). She’s a most friendly lady, and I think expecting a baby herself. During the classes, she explained, she would be there to offer all the support and advice we needed, and help us determine, for example, what Melody would like to get out of childbirth. Melody nodded and said, “Mmmm hmmm.”

“What would we like to get out of childbirth,” I repeated silently to myself. “Uh, you mean *besides* a baby??” One is wise to keep one’s male mouth shut under such circumstances. Instead, I squinted my eyes and nodded my head understandingly. Man, just as I thought I was starting to comprehend things… well, “comprehend,” as in, “there’s some quick breathing, you say ‘push’ a few times, there’s a screech and -- a stork flies overhead and drops a baby from the sky.” As long as you *catch* the baby, that’s the key. Or so I thought. Now I felt suddenly in the dark.

So what *does* a woman get out of childbirth? I figured it was just a baby, but maybe in the middle of some colossal contraction, her eyes are opened to the realms beyond and she’s able to see the world in a whole new light and look on life with new meaning. Methinks we might need some help with this. Apparently, one can acquire the services of a “doula”, a woman who comes to the delivery room and gives personal help during the ordeal. But I think I need some sort of help for myself. Even if it’s just someone to stand there, and add with a hearty slap on the back, “Keep it up, buddy, you’re doing great.” “Yeah, thanks coach, I’m hangin’ in there… still don’t know what we’re getting out of labour, though…”

Anyway, I hope these prenatal classes will fill the few small gaps in my knowledge. I’ll be sure to post an update when the mystery is solved.

Re: What do YOU Want Out of Childbirth?    By Claire on Saturday, May 12, 2007
get a grip Si cos you can gurantee Melody will until the drugs kick in, as for seeing into a whole new world think of it as a limited experince (read drugs again).
however should you need a good slap on the back during the experince il be happy to oblige :P. Just a tip, never tell a women its a few quick breaths and a couple of pushes if you plan to live.
hows the pre natal classes going anyway???they shown you the birthing videos yet???its enough to put me off wanting to have children!

Simon, for the first birth it's fear of the unknown and for subsequent births it's fear of the known!
