I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within. ~ Lillian Smith

With our family extending it was inevitable that our living space would have to extend as well (to support nappy storage, visiting mothers-in-law and this kind of thing). The past few weeks have been spent scanning findaproperty.com, talking to estate agents, viewing flats, and waiting for the right place to come up. Today we were finally able to settle on a house in Greenwich, and went down to sign the papers. Greenwich is 10 minutes south on the tube from our current flat.

Although Greenwich is a lovely area, it wasn’t our only option. I read in the paper this week, that a 6'x10' converted broom closet in Chelsea is going for £170,000. Chelsea is an area known more for famous footballers than first time home owners, but hey, if you want to get on the property ladder and live in a posh neighbourhood at the same time, this could be your opportunity. At 6x10 there is plenty of room for the whole family (assuming that your spouse and offspring are plankton). You have to stand on the toilet in order to shower (I’m not making this up). There is a small closet with a microwave, room for a few utensils and some clothing. To sleep you climb a ladder and lay on the top of the closet with about two feet clearance to the ceiling. It’s half the average price of a home in London, is the size of a ship’s galley, and is located in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the world. We weighed up the options and quickly said, “No thanks!” We don’t drive a Chelsea tractor (aka, "Yank Tank"; aka SUV), anyway.

We also briefly considered a converted shoe box in Knightsbridge, and a renovated badger hole in Notting Hill, but in the end decided on Greenwich. We’ll shop at Marks & Spencer instead of Harrods, and enjoy Greenwich Park instead of Hyde Park, but it works for me. Besides, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park is the location of the prime meridian and Greenwich Mean Time. How can you put a price on being able to straddle the eastern and western hemispheres on the way to work each morning?? Totally cool.

In other news, it snowed this week! And here's a photo from Colin and Nora's flat, taken after Kilburn ministry meeting. Okay, nighty night...

Speaking of location, I bet you didn't consider Sark! I'd never even heard of it (though it's one of the Channel Islands) till CBC did a report on it the other night on the news. No street lights, no cars, no income tax! They have a 450 yr old castle, a seigneur, and leftover feudalism--the last in Europe. Someone has decreed they must become a democracy, but they're not so sure they want that. Sounds like a unique and interesting place. Have you ever been there in your travels?
