No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other's worth. ~ Robert Southey

*sigh* ... yes, take your time, I've got all day. All the time in the world. No where else to go...

This past weekend we did a day-trip to see a German Christmas market. We visited Kristkindlemarkt (“Christ Child Market”) in Munich, which is the second biggest Christmas market in Germany after Nuremburg. The market is located right outside Marienplatz, the main square and centre of Munich since 1158.

We caught the two hour flight Friday after work and took the train into central Munich to find our hotel. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were informed that it was fully occupied, but with great apology they gave us the executive suite! It was a huge suite with a bedroom, two bathrooms, living area with couches, dining table and a work space. About three times as big as our flat in London. So far we liked Germany!

Our hotel was one stop on the metro from Marienplatz, so we decided to stay dry and skip the walk (it rained and snowed all day during our stay). We had a brief run-in with the automated ticket dispenser, which refused to return our debit card and randomly aborted the transaction several times. Unfortunately we were both wearing red Canada Winter Olympic backpacks, so there was no pretending we were ignorant tourists from another part of the Western hemisphere! Thankfully a kind man helped us out, and when we turned around with our tickets in hand, we saw the huge queue that had patiently been forming behind us. We found the platform and made a hasty escape.

When we emerged into the open air one stop later, we were instantly greeted with the scents and smells of the Christmas market. Cinnamon, pine, cider, mulled wine, sauerkraut – it was brilliant! The market is arranged as a series of decorated stalls selling all sorts of crafts, decorations and delicacies. I’m not a crafty sort of a person (in the Christmas sense of the word), but it was amazing going from stall to stall and seeing the beautiful hand made decorations the vendors were selling. We also enjoyed some delicious sausage and fresh chocolate-coated fruit. Mel had a yummy steamed milk and honey drink.

The forecast was rain all day, but it did try really hard to snow for us. It started as rain, then turned to sleet, then back to rain, and then finally snow! The weather didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits, and judging from the weather reports in Canada, those could be the only snow flakes we see all winter :(

Frohe Weihnachten!

Thank you very much. We are thinking of going to Europe for one of the Kkristkindlmarkts, and I am just beginning my research. We are Americans in Tucson, Arizona. The rain doesn't sound too attractive. We have been in Munich several times and love the city, but have you been to other places, say Nuremberg?
-- Lee
E-mail: probstlandr@comcast.net

Hi Lee. We haven't been to the Nuremberg market, which is Germany's biggest of course. We've been to Salzburg and Brussels as well but Munich's is the nicest of those three. We are planning to go back this year and do a day trip to Castle Neuschwanstein (the Disney castle), which is a two hour drive from Munich. Hopefully the weather is more agreeable this year, but honestly it was so enjoyable we didn't mind the rain/snow/sleet at all!

Have fun!
