Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen. ~ Benjamin Disraeli

Today was the long-awaited arrival of Father Christmas at Canary Wharf. Every child living in Docklands has likely been looking forward to this day for weeks. They’ve seen the sleigh display in the mall, and the only thing missing has been Father Christmas himself. The reason we were there was to see the fake snow, and I was glad to see I wasn’t the only one fascinated by how snow is produced at +10C.

The reindeer sleigh was due to arrive at 12:00 sharp. The scene was packed. All the little elves were there handing out chocolate and other goodies. There was face painting, there were balloon-tied animals, it was quite the show. At just before the hour, the excitement was building, and then it happened. Right on cue at 12:00 – the heavens opened. It wasn’t just typical winter drizzle, either. I mean it really started to pour.

The umbrellas popped up, parents and kids took cover, face paint ran – especially on the Tin Man (what was he doing here??). The jolly announcer on the stage tried to talk louder and sound even jollier, as if he could take people’s minds of the fact that they were getting soaked. We didn’t wait around to see the big red man appear, but we did see him later walking through the mall... likely looking for Krispy Kreme.

But, after the face paint is washed off and the animal balloons have long since shrivelled up, I hope those kids realize that there’s more to Christmas than Santa and his sleigh.

Hi Simon,
...a little off topic, but I wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday!!!!
It's almost past here in Canada (it's 11:27 pm)and the day is done in London England but I did remember! I tried to send from J2's Treo as I was on the road in the "lorrie" returning with him from Florida. Hope it was a good one (with lotsa chocolate)
