Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, all foes to true understanding. Likewise tolerance, or broad, wholesome charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in our little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. ~ Mark Twain

This past weekend we took a train up to Scotland to attend Byrne and Lois’s wedding. Glad to report that the hitching ceremony went off without a glitch! The train journey from King’s Cross to Inverness took 8-9 hours, and the flight back 1.5 hours. The train was very relaxing, and we enjoyed some lovely scenery along the way.

At one point during the reception, the lights dimmed and the main door opened to a shadowy figure obscured by dry ice and silhouetted by flood lights. Who was this strange figure? Could it be a horse-riding mounty? Bryne’s local Tim Horton’s employee in all his grandeur?? Neigh, neither of the two was it to be. A piper he was, and began he to belt out the first verse of a magnificent solo. At the chorus he marched out of the mist and into the hall, followed by the steady stream of a full piper band. It was brilliant!

Another highlight was a game pitting Team Canada (the four groomsmen, adorned with orange hunting caps) against Team Scotland (the four kilt-dressed ushers, adorned with hilarious orange hair and Tam ‘O Shanter hats). The game involved a Canadian/Scottish vocabulary quiz, a short round of Pictionary, and a national anthem singing contest. Team Scotland definitely won on the vocab, but Team Canada was hands down on the anthem. Oh Canada!

Bryne and Lois are moving back to Canada in September, and then on to be missionaries in a yet-to-be-determined country. Lois is a doctor and has always wanted to serve in a mission hospital. And Bryne, well if you know him, you know he’s a very gifted lad.

It was great to see some familiar faces from Ontario in attendance. Too bad we didn’t have time to see more of the sites… perhaps we’ll have to make it back for St. Patrick’s day ;-)
